Kuwenigala is a mountain situated closer to Nikadalupotha village in Kurunegala District in north western province in Sri Lanka. It is considered as a historical monument and there are some folk tales and historical information on this. This mountain is also called the Yakdessagala. It’s a popular destination for hiking, rock climbing, bird watching, and camping.
The name “Kuweni” has given to this mountain as a honor to the legendry queen Kuweni who loved to prince Vijaya Who came from India and became the first king of the country. The queen Kuweni belongs to Yakka tribes and that is a reason for the other name of the mountain -Yakdessagala.

According to history, The King Vijaya has suffered from a skin disease and has been advised to change the living environment from dry coastal area to wet area and he has decided to move to Dolukanda area which is closer to Kuwenigala. Dolukanda is again a hilly area with a green environment consists of lots of medicinal herbs. according to history, king Vijaya has lived in a rock cave in this garden for medication.

Within this time period queen Kuweni has lived in this kuwenigala mountain which is visible to Dolukanda area. It is said that queen Kuweni comes on to this rock and comb her very long hair to show King Vijaya. According to Falk tales and as it is visible it looks like a stone chair.
Kuwenigala is presently famous for Hike to the summit for panoramic views, enjoy rock climbing, bird watching, and peaceful camping in this culturally rich mountain and for luxury nature. Many local and foreign visitors visit this place and enjoy lot.
